Sarah has a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology and is a Registered Clinical Counsellor (R.C.C.) with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC). She has spent the last 16 years working as a school counsellor for children and youth in an independent First Nation’s school. Viewing her work through a trauma informed lens she specializes in helping children recognize their resilience and assists them in building their core competencies specifically focusing on their social and emotional development. Sarah has just completed her Expressive Arts Play Therapy Certificate and is receiving supervision in the use of sand tray for guiding young children to process stressful events and function successfully within their daily environments.
Sarah feels that play allows children to safely reveal the anger, fear, sadness or frustrations that are currently influencing their behaviour and affecting their development. She reflects children’s inner worlds through their expressive play and assists in empowering them to address and resolve their struggles using their innate creativity and wisdom. Eventually, in a protective presence children’s play evolves to where they can re-establish a sense of balance, boundaries and wellbeing.
In her therapeutic work with children, Sarah incorporates a number of modalities depending on best fit for the child and family. These include Narrative, DBT and cognitive-behavioral strategies along with expressive art therapies (painting, crafts, puppets, art projects, sand tray), social stories, and Filial (caregiver & child) play. She believes in the importance of attachments and working with the systems that affect a child’s experiences and development. Toxic stress and adverse childhood experiences have detrimental effects on a child’s ability to function within various systems (ie.school) and Sarah approaches all of her clients asking the question, what has happened to you? rather than, what is wrong with you?
